Substance Abuse Rehab: Substance Treatment Takes Time
When you have a loved one enter substance abuse rehab usually you’ve been the caregiver to their disease for a really, really long time. Now that they are actually getting substance abuse treatment it makes sense that you are feeling shut out of the process. You want to be there helping them every step of the way and they aren’t letting you. You want to come and visit them at the Toronto rehab and talk to them about what’s going on inside the rehab but they are like a closed book. It can hurt even worse on family day when they say things about you and your relationship with them that is hurtful. You feel like you’ve stuck by them through think and thin and here they are attacking you, at least it seems that way. Know this, recovery is a process. In rehab, sometimes addicts are opening up for the first time ever in their lives. It can be incredibly cathartic for the addict and sometimes it’s exactly what they need to get better but it means stepping on some people in the process. Does that mean its right? Does it mean you have to take it? Does it mean that you can’t get upset? No. What it means is you should go and talk to someone too and you should feel comfortable sharing as well what’s eaten you up inside about this person’s addiction. You also don’t have to stay. If this is the end of the line for you then it’s the end of the line. They can’t get sober for anyone but themselves so you are not responsible for the choices they make in regard to their addiction problem. Families of addicts need to talk to someone just as much as addicts do. If you have children having them and encouraging them to talk to someone is important.
