Alcohol Detox
Detox
Detoxification does not address the emotional causes of addictive behavior, but rather eliminates the toxins in the body that underlie the physical addiction, a necessary early step toward sobriety and alcohol recovery. The goals of detox are:
- Providing a safe withdrawal from the drug of dependence
- Establishing a process that is compassionate and confidential
- Preparation for the next phase of treatment
Alcohol Detox
Withdrawal from alcohol, a sedative, can usually be done on an outpatient rehab basis except with severe addiction or addiction to a second drug at the same time. Alcohol detox symptoms peak usually on the second day after the last drink and time required for withdrawal is three to five days, depending on the severity and duration of the addiction. The range of symptoms is broad and includes:
- Restlessness
- Irritability
- Anxiety
- Loss Of Appetite
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Tremors
- Elevated Heart Rate/Increased Blood Pressure
- Nightmares
- Increased Sensitivity To Sound
- Crawling Sensations On Skin
With severe alcohol addiction, other symptoms may include delirium, hallucinations, elevated body temperature and seizures, and requite inpatient care in an alcohol rehab facility.
